back pain, nerve block

Nerve block is an injection of local anesthetic and steroids that is injected directly to the area of affected nerve. Often, the goal is to help people avoid surgery, increase the function and to take role in physical therapy. A nerve block may allow a damaged nerve time to heal, provide temporary pain relief and decrease inflammation.

Everyone responds differently to a nerve block. For some people, a nerve block gives immediate relief. For other people, it takes a series of injections before nerve block helps the pain. This is because pain is a personal perception and everyone responds differently. Research has also shown for people with chronic back pain of 10 years or more, pain could come from more than one joint or nerve and for this reason people with chronic back pain may need more than one injection before they feel the relief.
